Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Barbara B Mann Performing Arts Hall

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 motion picture Moulin Rouge was converted into the iconic musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was given more life by Tony Awardees and cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who embodied the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music scoring and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the main stage.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show exemplifying the triumph of love against odds that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the span of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his big career break. He aspires to start a chance to succeed as a writer and journeys to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two local acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to write a play that they can flaunt. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the entertainer of the Moulin Rouge that he wishes to get to know more. Their budding relationship however encounters a haughty competitor in the form of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in agreement for a large financial trade-off to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the live stage.

Fundamentally a classical tale that remains relatable and relevant even now, the show is also a melting pot of both ballads and pop music, incorporating songs not just from the 2001 film, but also musical mash-ups and medleys from new songs that were injected into the narrative of the play.
