Synopsis

The show has its origination in the early 1930s just before the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the mob commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re performing. Rather than allow the mobster to try to kill them, the musicians decide to go on the run.

They put on costumes and, though they're cross-dressing, are able to join a touring all-female swing big band. While touring, the two fall for the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They must keep their true identities protected, but they both hope to fall in love with Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, romances form that threaten to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI get involved, spotting Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups traveling to performances and its ability to find new investors.

Jerry, now identifying as Daphne, falls falls for an investor, leading to an engagement. They can't keep their identities hidden forever, but none of the characters let that change their feelings for each other. As Prohibition ends, the characters are able to move on with their new lives.

Show origins

This beloved musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It earned 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. It also won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. Ensuring you will enjoy the visual portions of the show as much as the amazing music and lyrics. Production History
