Synopsis

The show is set in the early 1930s just prior to the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, witness the mob commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they are performing. Rather than allow the mobster to make them a target, the musicians decide to go on the run.

They put on disguises and join a touring all-girl swing big band. While touring, the two fall for the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They keep their true identities protected, but they both hope to find romance Sugar Kane.

Whilst touring, engagements form that could serve to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The mob and the FBI get involved, recognizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines, further complicating the groups touring to performances and its ability to make agreements with new investors.

Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to a marriage proposal. Eventually, everyones real identity becomes known, but that doesn't change their feelings for each other. As Prohibition ends, the characters are able to move on with their new lives.

Origins

This captivating musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It received 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. It also won Best Costumes and Best Choreography. This musical follows the entrancing story told in the 1959 movie. The film starred the famous Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time and still to this day. Production History
